A poem by Alexis Clausell
Persephone
the ground began to rumble
splitting the earth from her core
moss and dirt peeling away
revealing a young maiden
vulnerable and innocent
crawling her way to the surface
the morning dew in her hair
barefooted on the green grass
with shyness and curiosity about her
she frolicked the meadow
sniffing the lavender and dandelions
sweetly blowing kisses
to the fellow fairies
peacefully nestled on tulip petals
in the middle of the meadow
was an old oak tree
the young maiden sat down
with the sturdy trunk supporting her back
songbirds chirping in the branches
the sky a solace shade of blue
she watched the clouds go by
daydreaming
of being held in a lover’s protective embrace
setting her free
deep in the pink clouds
of her delightful fantasy
she asks out loud
“show me the face of my beloved”
the illusion fading away
revealing eyes of fierceness
on a face that matched her own
feeling frazzled
the young maiden awakens to reality
while two white doves
placed a crown of primroses
on the maiden’s head
animals from the land surrounding her
the mother deer bowing her solemn head
although receptive to her initiation
the maiden is still not quite sure
who she really is
nor the powers she possesses
she is however
quite certain
she is to embark on a journey
one the great earth mother
always knew
she would one day lead
